Dementia is a disorder that is characterized by a decline in cognition involving one or more cognitive domains (learning and memory, language, executive function, complex attention, perceptual-motor, social cognition). It is estimated that 44 million people worldwide have dementia, but only 1 in 4 have been diagnosed. Progressive cognitive decline is a top cause for disabilities later in life. In 2016, 15.9 million family caregivers provided an estimated 18.2 billion hours and $230 billion worth of care. In 2017, Alzheimer’s Disease cost the United States $259 billion. Pathology and risk factors are fairly well understood, yet conventional interventions continually fail. Prevention and a comprehensive integrative medical approach has been proven to provide the best outcomes and quality of life, both for patients and their families. This presentation will thoroughly review evidence and clinical based diagnoses, integrative treatment strategies, and interventions to improve patient outcomes.
