General Medical Care
General practitioners treat both acute and chronic conditions. Using preventive medicine, Dr. Barkshire believes it is important to identify and treat the cause of illness, including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual imbalances. Prevention is accomplished through education and promotion of life habits that create optimal health. She believes in educating and encouraging patients to take responsibility for their health.
Nutrition and Dietary Therapy
The primary focus is to help people establish a healthy relationship to food. We are what we eat and nutrition is definitely one of the biggest challenges for us all. We eat for many reasons other than hunger and just keeping up with shopping and cooking in our busy world is a challenge. Every cell in our body is made from the foods we put into our mouths so we can actually change the way we are made by changing the foods we eat. Using food as medicine is one foundational way to improve our health.
Herbal Medicine
Medicinal herbs in such forms as tinctures, capsules, teas, and creams help facilitate detoxification, help fight infections, and nourish the body. There is extensive research showing that herbal remedies are both safe and effective in alleviating many clinical conditions when compared to synthetic pharmaceuticals.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a medicine that developed from the observation that “like cures like,” meaning that the same substance that causes particular symptoms in a healthy person can cure those same symptoms in someone who is sick. Medicines are prepared from very small amounts of plant, mineral, and animal substances. It is a very safe and gentle technique that has been practiced for hundreds of years throughout the world. Dr. Barkshire completed an additional 2 year certificate program in constitutional homeopathy through the New England School of Homeopathy.
Emotional Support and Lifestyle counseling
Dr. Barkshire believes that many illnesses have a connection to our emotions and are often overlooked in conventional medicine. She is able available to work with you to explore personal issues that may be contributing to your current health. Lifestyle counseling is important in treating the whole person. Lifestyle counseling helps restore balance in mind, body and spirit.
