Blue Light: Separating Fact From Fiction ~ Phillip Yuhas, OD, PhD, FAAO

September 23 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

$15 – $65

Understanding the effects of blue light on the human visual system is a convoluted task. On one hand, blue light has been implicated in the development and progression of ocular diseases such as macular degeneration and ocular melanoma. On the other, blue light exposure may enhance attention levels and learning ability. The proliferation of personal electronic devices and blue-blocking ophthalmic lens coatings have only complicated the patient education process. This discussion will present the risks and benefits of blue light exposure and its abatement in order to provide primary care practitioners with the data necessary to make recommendations to their patients.

Speaker Bio: Phillip Yuhas, OD, PhD, is a clinician-scientist on faculty at The Ohio State University College of Optometry in Columbus, OH. He teaches a course on glaucoma in the College’s optometry curriculum and staffs the College’s ocular disease clinic. His research program focuses on the effect that traumatic brain injuries have on the retina and on changes to the biomechanical properties of the eye in patients with glaucoma. On the weekends he manages his own patient population at a local private practice.
