A patient-centered approach to pharmaceutical prescribing to treat hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) and review of appropriate levels of intervention based on patient status, goals, and risk. Succinct review of different classes of oral and injectable medications used to treat DM2, including mechanism of action, indications, contraindications, common side effects, monitoring parameters, and special considerations such as use in populations with cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. The review will include highlights on current research and standards of care regarding the following diabetes medications: biguanides (metformin), sulfonylureas, DPP-4 inhibitors, thiazolidinediones (TZDs), GLP-1 agonists, and SGLT2 inhibitors. Insulin will be touched on briefly to include the basic characteristics and indications. Helpful pharmaceutical resources will be reviewed to aid in choosing the right medication for patients. In addition, the review will have an integrated approach by highlighting adjunctive herbal and supplemental treatments to offset nutrient deficiencies and side effects of pharmaceuticals.
