Did you know that at least 70% of individuals living with PCOS go undiagnosed? Ironically, for those who do receive a diagnosis, this usually only occurs after experiencing fertility issues during their early reproductive years (ages 20-30). This alludes a huge marginal error for those pursuing pregnancy later in life or who never pursue it at all.
While theses people go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, PCOS continues to adversely impact their mental wellbeing and quality of life. Symptoms like cystic acne, early menarche, and obesity may lead to ostracization, emotional eating, body dysmorphia, disordered eating, and/or isolation.
PCOS is a serious genetic and epigenetic multisystemic condition. Focusing only on the reproductive impacts is a gross disservice to patients. Their care must extend to their psychological welfare. This presentation will illuminate the intersection of PCOS diagnosis, clinician understanding of PCOS, and the mental and emotional repercussions for patients.
