Description

This talk will introduce a much needed conversation regarding health disparities and their direct impacts on the health outcomes of the patients we provide care for. The issue of health disparities is important both from an equity standpoint and for achieving the goal of improving overall population health. We will review information and data as it pertains to gaps in medical care that contribute to negative health outcomes and the link with social, economical, and/or environmental disadvantages. This talk will explore the following questions: What are health care disparities? Why do they exist? Why does this matter? What is being done to address these disparities? We will discuss current challenges in the efforts to change policy and priorities. We will also discuss how to apply culturally informed practices in the clinical setting when working with patients to ensure all of our patients are receiving the highest quality of care. We will discuss how to acknowledge, respect, and integrate patients' cultural beliefs, values, and perspectives. We will initially discuss understanding our own perceptions and how this can impact the care we offer and deliver. We will discuss how to look at things through a cultural lens. All of this will help us understand how best to restore safety and establish trust with patients. We will discuss resources and tools to be utilized in clinical practice. From the naturopathic medical approach, we will discuss some clinical interventions by way of more commonly seen health conditions in individuals from different ethnic groups. There will be review of nutrients and considerations when working up a clinical case. We will also discuss health disparities and their implications in light of recent events in the past year.
