YES We Can! Strategies to improve metabolic and cognitive resilience as we age

Modern medical science is delving into the myriad systems involved in maximizing our longevity. Current research renders fascinating insights into the minute details of homeostatic and regenerative processes down to a cellular and even a molecular level. Nevertheless, as our knowledge expands into the future, our path towards healthy aging is embedded in traditional wisdom from the past. Concepts familiar to older naturopathic physicians are resurfacing as new discoveries. Research is redefining, but also validating, strategies such as cleansing (liver support), fasting, and dietary interventions in support of healthy intestinal flora.

Naturopathic principles have much to offer in the realm of cognitive and metabolic resilience, and modern research enhances our understanding of the regulatory factors in cellular and systemic homeostasis. By building on these foundations, we can provide our patients with impactful strategies to prevent or reverse the cascade of inflammatory events leading towards systemic metabolic disorders and, in particular, their neurological consequences.

Optimizing Perimenopausal Body Composition to Maintain Overall Health While Aging

As menopause approaches, the vast majority of women notice an increase in their waist circumference while their muscles start to lose strength, and this seems to happen despite keeping the same eating and exercise habits. People want to feel good about how they look, but helping patients improve body composition has much deeper ramifications beyond physical appearance. Building and maintaining muscle during this time is crucial to maintain function and cardiovascular, metabolic, and cognitive health as a person ages. Perimenopausal females have different nutritional and physical activity requirements than they have in their younger years. Patients need the right knowledge as well as effective support to be successful with behavior changes. Hormone replacement and achieving healthy patterns of cortisol secretion can enhance the benefits of working out and eating well. Individuals utilizing GLP-1 agonists must take specific actions to protect their lean mass. This presentation will help you ensure that, even as your patients are looking slimmer, they are making changes that extend their health span.

Longevity: The Role of Diet and Microbiome Modulation in Health and Disease

Diet and healthy lifestyle modifications are well established as fundamental contributors to improved health and longevity and are constantly being promoted as essentials to well-being. Many individuals have attempted to change their habits to improve their health, but often with limited success. In fact, cardiometabolic disease has reached epidemic proportions - with obesity, diabetes, and associated heart and kidney disease dramatically on the rise in Western societies, leading to significant morbidity, socioeconomic burden, and mortality.

While groundbreaking new drug therapies such as GLP1 agonists and SGLT2 antagonists have emerged in the last decade as having a significant impact on treatment of cardiometabolic diseases, they do not address the underlying initiator/contributor to cardiometabolic disruption, which has largely been attributed to imbalance in the microbiome. The role of the microbiome in health and disease has become a prominent area of research. Dysbiosis is observed across a host of chronic diseases, impacting patient well-being and longevity. A clear role of microbiome imbalance early in kidney disease has been established, and dysbiosis has been shown to play a critical role not only in patient well-being, but also as a significant contributor to acceleration of CKD to end stage renal disease (ESRD).

Research over the past two decades has demonstrated that pre/probiotic supplements can address dysbiosis in CKD through several modes of action. Modulation of the microbiome with pre/probiotic combination supplements is yielding increasing evidence of slowing CKD progression, as well as improving patient well-being, quality-of-life, and longevity. Such observations have far-reaching implications – microbiome modulation is considered the next frontier in the prevention and treatment of cardiometabolic diseases.
