YES We Can! Strategies to improve metabolic and cognitive resilience as we age
View abstract
Modern medical science is delving into the myriad systems involved in maximizing our longevity. Current research renders fascinating insights into the minute details of homeostatic and regenerative processes down to a cellular and even a molecular level. Nevertheless, as our knowledge expands into the future, our path towards healthy aging is embedded in traditional wisdom from the past. Concepts familiar to older naturopathic physicians are resurfacing as new discoveries. Research is redefining, but also validating, strategies such as cleansing (liver support), fasting, and dietary interventions in support of healthy intestinal flora.
Naturopathic principles have much to offer in the realm of cognitive and metabolic resilience, and modern research enhances our understanding of the regulatory factors in cellular and systemic homeostasis. By building on these foundations, we can provide our patients with impactful strategies to prevent or reverse the cascade of inflammatory events leading towards systemic metabolic disorders and, in particular, their neurological consequences.

Homeopathic Management of Common Infectious Coughs
View abstract
A cough is the most common symptom reported in healthcare providers' offices. Unfortunately, the prevalence of cough has increased significantly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Research shows that a cough can persist for more than four weeks, and in some cases, up to six months after COVID-19 infection. Chronic cough carries a significant global epidemiological burden. As naturopathic doctors, we provide effective alternative treatments for patients who have not experienced relief from conventional pharmaceutical therapies for acute or chronic cough. Integrating homeopathic remedies into our therapeutic armamentarium will greatly enhance our ability to treat various types of cough—whether acute or chronic, infectious or non-infectious.

The Overlooked Connection Between the Gut Microbiome and Chronic Kidney Disease: The promise of microbiome modulation
View abstract
The role of diet and healthy lifestyle modification is well established as a fundamental contributor to improved health and this is constantly being promoted as essential to well-being. Many individuals have attempted to change their habits to improve their health, but often have only limited success. In fact, cardiometabolic disease has reached epidemic proportions, with obesity, diabetes and associated heart and kidney disease dramatically on the rise in Western societies, leading to significant morbidity, socioeconomic burden, and mortality.
The role of the microbiome in health and disease has become a prominent area of research. Dysbiosis (imbalance of the microbiome) is observed across a host of chronic diseases, impacting patient well-being. A clear role of microbiome imbalance early in kidney disease has been established, and with progression to chronic kidney disease (CKD) dysbiosis has been shown to play a critical role not only in patient well-being, but also as a significant contributor to acceleration of CKD to ends stage renal disease (ESRD).
Research over the past two decades has demonstrated that pre/probiotic supplements can address dysbiosis in CKD. This is achieved through several modes of action: 1. reduction in “leaky gut” (epithelial tight-junction disruption in the large intestine) and prevention of low- level endotoxemia and inflammatory chemo/cytokine elevation in the bloodstream and impact on critical organs; 2. reduction in uremic and cardiovascular toxin production and systemic accumulation, which is achieved both through metabolism of these toxins in the gut and natural “enteric dialysis” via fecal elimination. Modulation of the microbiome with pre/probiotic combination supplements is yielding increasing evidence of slowing CKD progression, as well as improvement in patient well-being, and quality-of life. Such observations have far-reaching implications – microbiome modulation is considered the next frontier in the prevention and treatment of Chronic Kidney Disease.
