Description

Being asked to weigh in on when an older patient should consider stopping driving is one of the more common ethical questions a primary care physician will encounter. There are many factors, some of which are cleanly objective, but many which are more subjective and difficult to easily incorporate into an official medical judgement. Rather than offering vague advice like “you’ll know when it’s time” or suggesting an arbitrary cut-off age, this talk will give you a solid understanding of the existing breadth of regulations and what physical changes are most common in aging that impact ability to drive, and explain the effect of cognitive decline on driving ability. You will leave this presentation with a more confident grasp of how to have this important discussion with patients as well as family members.
