A mix of cultural bias and lack of training for healthcare professionals leaves a deficit in providing safe, effective and non-traumatizing medical care for bodies of size. This presentation will cover data to challenge recommendations for weight loss and provide foundations in safely recommending dietary interventions in a clinical setting. Exploration around screening for disordered relationship to food, exercise and body image will be addressed. Participants will gain applicable harm reduction strategies including physical exam, office set up and counseling techniques for preventing eating disorders and providing a trauma informed care approach for all body sizes.
Dr. Lily Stokely is the founder and co-owner of One Connection Healthcare specializing in medical management of eating disorders and weight inclusive primary care. She is a licensed primary care naturopathic physician who studied at Bastyr University. She additionally completed a two-year residency under the supervision of Dr. Molly Niedermeyer at Emerald City Naturopathic Clinic. As the co-owner of One Connection Healthcare, Dr. Lily manages the CNME residency site that the clinic hosts. Currently the clinic is the host for three residents to further training in eating disorder management and chronic disease.
She has a Bachelor of Science in dietetics from The University of California, Berkeley where she gained additional training in teaching Health at Every Size ® and Intuitive Eating models. Additionally, Lily is a yoga teacher with experience instructing private and public classes as well as yoga teacher trainings.
Dr. Tara O’Brien graduated from Bastyr University in 2020 and went on to complete a first-year residency program through Bastyr Center for Natural Health. She currently practices at Eastside Natural Medicine in Kenmore, WA , completing a second-year residency. Dr. O’Brien practices from a trauma-informed and weight-inclusive paradigm; she strongly believes that the clinical experience itself can be medicine. Establishing the patient’s definition of health and unpacking its origin to move toward an understanding of each person’s bodily autonomy is her highest goal as a provider. Dr. O’Brien utilizes physical medicine, counseling, and botanical medicine as primary modalities, but is well versed in and leans on many more in the clinical encounter.
